One of the greatest honors is to be invited into some one's home for a meal or celebration. We were privileged to join one of the cooks at the orphanage, Filomena, and her family in celebrating her husband's birthday. I have been close to Filomena since my first trip here last summer.
She and her husband live in a two room house with her daughter, granddaughter and other son. Her husband is a transport driver and is on the road quite a bit. Her daughter stays home to care for her child and her son is very excited because he is going to start working at Pizza Hut, which is one of the first western restaurants/stores to come to Trujillo. Pizza Hut is a pretty classy restaurant here. (I should mention that Joel is pretty excited about Pizza Hut, as well.)
Many people here live so simply, but are still so generous to share what they have. While Filomena was cooking the meal, we walked to a little market to pick up some a few last minute things. Filomena was proud to serve a large filet of chicken, choclo (corn), cucumber, tomatoes, beet salad and CHICKEN FEET.... yummy!
